Founding & Early Growth
Founded in 2004 by Mr. Mbulelo Maqubela and
Mr. Petros P. Mbewu, NESS Consulting Services (Pty) Ltd set out to deliver affordable, accessible financial solutions. Officially incorporated in 2005 and licensed as an FSP in 2006, NESS is a trusted, 100% Black-owned and Black-managed firm with Level 1 BBBEE status. Its first office opened in Bezuidenhout Valley, where the company secured its inaugural client—kickstarting a journey rooted in empowerment, professionalism, and purpose.
NESS targets the LSM 1–6 segment, providing accessible, affordable cash funeral policies tailored for individuals and group schemes. With a combined leadership experience exceeding 50 years in the financial services sector—particularly in insurance—NESS brings seasoned expertise, trusted industry knowledge, and a deep understanding of client needs.
2007 - 2009
Expansion, Milestones & Product Innovation
NESS experienced commendable growth, relocating in 2007 to larger offices in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. With a solid foundation in administration and product solutions, the company expanded its national footprint—most notably establishing operations in KwaZulu-Natal with a successful launch in Durban. In 2008, NESS achieved a significant business milestone by surpassing R10 million in Annual Premium Income (API). The momentum continued in 2009 with the launch of the Member Plus Product, enhancing NESS’s offering to better serve its growing client base.
2010 - 2012
NESS Continues Strategic Expansion and Governance Excellence
NESS delivers specialized Consulting, Administration, and Product development solutions in the Long-term Insurance sector, with a strong reputation for funeral insurance administration. Its clients include funeral parlours, employer groups, and underwriters, underscoring its industry credibility. Since opening offices in Potchefstroom (North West) and Mthatha (Eastern Cape) in 2011, NESS has expanded across multiple provinces, advancing financial inclusion. Its commitment to sound governance ensures regulatory compliance and long-term sustainability.
2013 - 2015
A Decade of Resilience and Innovation at NESS
For over 10 years, NESS has delivered trusted service offering insurance solutions that balance quality protection with value-based pricing. In 2013, the company launched a inhouse built document management and policy administration system, empowering Group Schemes, Trade Unions, and Affinity Groups to efficiently manage subscriptions and facilitate service provider payments. Thanks to long-standing partnerships with underwriters, NESS consistently secures competitive rates. The company’s strong risk management and business continuity planning came to the fore in 2014, when it withstood a devastating fire at its 209 Smit street Braamfontein offices. As one of the SMME sector’s early adopters of flexible work practices, NESS continued operations uninterrupted. By 2015, NESS was firmly on a recovery path—marking a decade of growth and projecting toward a R100 million milestone.
2016 - 2020
Advancing Insurance Administration with Impact
NESS has steadily progressed toward the R100 million milestone by integrating robust governance, strategic talent management, digital transformation, and trusted partnerships.
In 2016, Sanlam retained NESS as one of only three administrators—out of 15—recognizing its strengths in administration, compliance, governance, and IT infrastructure. The momentum continued in 2017 when Old Mutual appointed NESS to manage its emerging markets group portfolio. Expansion followed with new offices in Ulundi (KZN) and Butterworth (Eastern Cape).
In 2019, NESS faced a major cyberattack; yet, its rapid five-day recovery showcased strong risk resilience and operational continuity.
In 2020, NESS launched its Employee Benefits product through its subsidiary, Imbewu Investment Holdings. Across all these milestones, NESS’s market success has been driven by its integrated approach to governance, people, processes, and technology—along with the dedication of its skilled employees and partners.
